The Enchanted Pond
Inspired by the artwork Gazebo of Prayer by Thomas Kinkaid
The small gazebo sits in the center of a forest beside an enchanted pond where faeries dance. Beloved by the people that live outside the forest, a small path was cut and the gazebo was built so the people could watch the faeries dance and play.
Outsiders moved into the small town beside the forest and heard of these dancing faeries, but the locals were so protective of their treasure that a large gate was built to keep the new arrivals out. Protective turned into coveting though and soon after the townsfolk lost all friendship between them as the argued for who should have the right to visit the enchanted pond.
Eventually people stopped believing the tales of dancing faeries in the gated off pond, because no one was allowed inside to see them. The keeper of the last key had become so filled with greed that he had control over the gate that he himself never visited for fear that the key would be stolen or that his belongings would be destroyed by the jealous while he was away.
The gazebo sat empty but for the birds, but these were not enough. The faeries loved to dance not just for the joy of dancing, but to see the joy upon their audiences faces. There was no audience, so no joy filled the pond, and so no faeries danced.
Many years later, after the old man had died, after his son had died, and after his grandson had returned home, his grandchild found the key. Excited by the aspect of seeing the dancing faeries that he’d heard tales of and filled his dreams, the boy raced to the enchanted pond. The gate unlocked and a wave of joy filled the boy as he walked through and saw the beautiful gazebo next to the serene pond. The boy stood, watching with joy and excitement for the faeries to dance for him, but it had been too long and the faeries were gone.
The boy is sad, he can feel the slight excess of enchantment that still sit about the pond where the faeries danced, but knows they are no longer present. He leaves, but lets the gate stay open so that he and others may return to look upon the beautiful pond whenever they wish, in the hopes that someday, when their beloved audience returns, the faeries may return as well.
Character Description: Regi
A powered human character
Regi was born with the unique ability of immunity and near-instantaneous healing. No gasses toxins or ailments effect him in any way, and any physical damage he takes, gunshot wounds, acid damage and the like, are healed so fast as to almost not exist at all. Although he does feel pain, it is typically for such a short period of time it goes completely ignored. Along with his own quick healing ability, Regi has the secondary ability to transfer his healing power to another with a touch. So powerful is his power to heal that even ‘dead’ nerve clusters can be re-energized and tissue can become stronger, causing paraplegics to be able to walk and brain damage victims to fully regain themselves. The only seeming limitation is that if a bone or organ is outright removed or missing, his power cannot grow it back in others, so he can’t have an amputee gain their missing limb. Growing up with perfect immunity to illness and near immunity to damage caused Regi to never develop true empathy. Although he is well educated and understands the concept of empathy, he himself does not understand it on a physical level, so many times a person screaming in pain will meet with a shrug or perhaps a laugh at the funny sound while a weak and ill person is largely ignored. Because of his education he also understands, but doesn’t fully believe in, the necessity of using his power to others advantage. He is willing to, albeit grudgingly assist those in pain or dying, but most often he prefers not to because of the effect that a single miraculous healing has, that of causing any else in the area no matter how insignificant the injury/illness to seek out the miracle healer an occupy his whole being for their own sake. This reaction to healers has caused Regi to become very cynical of any person he ever meets in any form of pain, as well as also causing him to become a wandering vagrant, continuously traveling unwilling to stay in a location for too long lest he should decide to heal someone and once again gets bombarded with requests to heal all manner of scratch and cough. Because of his personal healing ability Regi has also developed a love of fighting. One of his favorite past times is to simply walk into bars, the seedier the better, and sucker punch the first guy he sees. A brawl will almost always ensue and Regi will joyfully take whatever hits are thrown at him and pay back triple. Another favored past time is when walking through a city and seeing those that are obviously suffering a malady that he can heal, Regi will walk up to the person and punch them as hard as he can causing them to fall to the ground while he walks past them never breaking his stride. When punching these people however Regi puts his healing power into his fist, so the violent act of being felled by a punch also cures them, often only noticing their newfound health after they finish screaming at the ever-moving attacker. Regi is not a nice guy, and has become a rather angry person with a lot of cynicism directed at other people. With no feeling of empathy and his cynical outlook on life, he very rarely uses his ability to heal others. Only when it amuses him, as well as specific occasions, is he willing to use his power for the sake of others.Character Description: Kent
A powered human character
A young man in his early 20s living in Seattle. His mother dying during giving birth, Kent was named by the delivering nurse who took pity on him and named him after the city he was born rather than writing on his birth certificate “John Doe”. Kent later learned that his mother was a walk in to the hospital and had no identification on her, nor anyone with her.
Kent grew up in child services, bouncing between foster homes until he turned seventeen and disappeared from his last family a year early. Despite or perhaps in spite of his rocky upbringing Kent never became a cynic of society as he saw others who grew up in his citation had. Never minding that he was never taken by a family and never feeling truly attached to any of his foster families, Kent never took a taken name and thus is legally only having the given name of Kent.
Another aspect than his unique naming situation sets Kent apart from others. Kent has, for as long as he can recall, been able to transition instantaneously from one place to another. With his unique ability of supercharging cells to the point of becoming as light and traveling at lights speed from one place to another, very briefly glowing before departure and after arrival, thus Kent’s act of teleporting has been nicknamed by himself as ‘flashing’. Because of the speed involved in transportation, Kent can’t change direction or posture during travel, thus whatever action or stance he takes before flashing, he will have after. Kent can however flash in any direction upon the X-Y-Z axis when he flashes.
Another aspect of flashing is that the act of supercharging in order to transport causes a massive calorie burning. The act of flashing five feet requires the same amount of calorie burn as a mile long sprint. Because of this, Kent requires a very large diet of calorie consumption, less if he doesn’t flash often.
Kent uses his flash ability in various ways aside from simply traveling from point A to point B. By chaining together many flashes at his farthest distance, Kent can travel very far in a very short amount of time, however chaining too many distant flashes together leaves him drained of energy quickly. In a similar way Kent can get a good read on his surroundings by flashing high into the air and flashing again a slight difference higher before beginning to fall, then after seeing what he needs to see, flashing back to the ground without any harm from falling.
Item Description: Silver Bracer
A magical armament
The bracer transforms based on the actions of the user and guided by the way the wearer holds his hand. A magically infused armament that few can use. When worn and used by a being it becomes all but impossible for anyone else to use that particular item unless under extraordinary circumstance, not a weapon that can be stolen from the user and used against. Relaxed: when not in use the item appears as no more than a standard stainless steel bracer, aside from the lack of a visible latch giving the appearance of being permanently attached. Combat Ready: when the wearer flexes his hand the armors magic activates turning the bracer into a full gauntlet that reaches from the hand to the shoulder. The magic of the gauntlet allows the users strength to multiply in the gauntleted arm. Shield: when the hand is formed so the fingers point strait outward the gauntlet sprouts thin shields above and below the forearm that arc down to the hand. Though thin the shield is all but impenetrable. Blade: When the wearers hand is pointed out but the tips are pointed down to touch the between the upper joint and palm a 6” long thin blade extends from the gauntlet from the joint between the forearm and the hand. Claw: When the wearer spreads his fingers into three groups (thumb – forefinger/index finger – ring finger/pinky) the gauntlets fingers become three large sharp claws that, although not as sharp or obtains the reach of the lone blade, can offer more control and with the increased protection in the palm of the clawed hand is more defensible as well. Fear not the Darkness
Tis but calling you home
For oft the only way to the Light
Is to wade through the black
Fear not the Darkness
Nor its cold
For at the end of the black
Rests Lights warmth
Fear not the Darkness
Learn to see through it
As Light will always shine through
Even the deepest black
Fear not the Darkness
Ignorance of Muses
A pantoum
Muses dance excitedly
But I cannot see them
Pushing, urging, encouraging
Wishing their duty to commence
Muses flit about eagerly
But I cannot see them
Gathering that which inspires
Waving them franticly
Muses run around in joy
But I cannot see them
Point at things merrily
Objects of interesting note
Muses jump and wave and dance
But I cannot see them
They do all they can to inspire
And yet the words won’t come
Fear Not The Darkness
The wandering mind, looking ahead toward the goal, a large flashing light that says poem. Stare at the sign, try to focus, eyes wander to a bush on the left, fae are dancing between the leaves. No, focus, eyes front, poem! Flashing Sign! Eyes drawn left and up to a dragon soaring in the sky letting out a loud bellow, its mighty wings… eyes forward again. Focus on that which needs to be focused on. What is a poem, what is the glowing sign telling you to write. Eyes turn left again as a pack of dogs run by chasing something, what is the weather like, is it a good day to play with the dogs. Snap, the mind remembers the here and now and returns to the golden sign, poem, write, but what. Eyes return right, but to the ground, has the mud dried yet, should the
yardwork commence. No, here, now, sign, poem, write. Above the sign a flock of birds following a flying figure. The figure darts up, the birds follow, the figure darts down, the birds follow, the figure rolls, the birds follow. The soaring dragon meets the figure, sign, the figure flies with the dragon, sign, the fae dance upon the dragons wings, sign, the flock of birds join the fae, SIGN, the figure flyes as the dragons roar turns from menacing, SIGN, to melodic signing as the fae, SIGN!, and birds join. The figure stops flying as the birds and fae and dragon depart. Behind the figure is something. Something shining and perhaps flashing. The mind focuses on the flashing thing. A sign that says poem…Hectic Imagination
